The best time to photograph a newborn is typically within the first 5-14 days after birth. During this period, newborns are generally more sleepy and easier to pose, which allows for capturing those classic, serene, and curled-up poses that many parents cherish. Here's why this time frame is ideal:
Sleepiness: Newborns tend to sleep deeply and for longer stretches during their first two weeks. This makes it easier to pose them without waking them up.
Flexibility: Babies are still very flexible in the early days, retaining some of the fetal positions they were in while in the womb. This allows photographers to position them in those sweet, curled-up poses that are highly sought after in newborn photography.
Less Fussiness: During the first two weeks, newborns are usually less fussy and more adaptable to being handled and posed. They haven't yet developed colic or other discomforts that can make them more irritable.
Minimal Skin Issues: Newborns tend to have smoother skin within the first two weeks. After this period, they may start to develop baby acne, cradle cap, or peeling skin, which can be more challenging to edit in post-processing.
However, every baby is different, and can successfully be captured beautifully in newborn photos that is slightly outside this window.
